This MX-5, a Memories III, was for sale in Schömberg. It had a broken engine, a dent in the left door, and a neglected interior. In my opinion, it was a good candidate to salvage using parts from Project Oberhausen.
It was immediately clear that the car had been sitting idle for a while and needed some attention from an enthusiast.

After giving the car a good cleaning and wash, it already looks a lot better.

After that, the process of completely restoring and refurbishing the car began. The entire interior was removed, including the dashboard and all the floor carpeting. The soft top was replaced with the one from Project Oberhausen, which didn’t survive the accident and was sold for parts. Both seats were also donated from that same car, as was the left door. Many more parts from that car were used in this one. Whenever I thought I had a better part, I used it. For example, the alternator was also replaced.
Next, I began the experiment with the Mazda 6 cruise control. All the steps of that experiment can be found via this link
In addition, there’s a playlist on YouTube featuring videos in which this car plays a role.
You can find that playlist here
After 8 months, the car was officially imported into the Netherlands and passed its first annual inspection.
The Schömberg Project is nearing completion. The car drives really well, but there are still a few areas for improvement.
What’s next?
I answer that question in the following video.
In hindsight, would I do it again?
In the end, the decision was made to sell this car.
The new owner wanted to use both the original wooden steering wheel and the color-matched Mazda 6 steering wheel. In the video below, I’ll show you how to switch between the two steering wheels and what else is involved in the process.
